Description

This mock project was designed as a visual storytelling initiative for The Seattle Times. The goal was to create clear, data-driven visualizations that help communicate Seattle's housing affordability crisis. By combining compelling charts and informative layouts, I aimed to present complex data in a digestible format for readers, bridging the gap between statistical information and public understanding. The visualizations focus on the disparities between rising home prices, rental rates, and household incomes from 2009 to 2024. They offer a detailed look into how Seattle's housing market has become less affordable over time, with clear graphical representations of median household income growth and rental price increases by unit size. Deliverables
Seattle Average Rental Price by Unit Size (Bar Chart) A bar chart visualizing the rental price increase by unit size (Studio, 1-Bedroom, 2-Bedroom, and 3-Bedroom) from 2024 data. This chart shows how different unit sizes have experienced varying levels of price increases, highlighting the affordability challenges for renters in Seattle.
Seattle Median Household Income (Line Graph) A clean line graph illustrating the growth of median household income in Seattle from 2009 to 2024. This chart is an essential part of the narrative, showcasing how household incomes, while rising, have not kept pace with the city's skyrocketing housing prices.
Seattle Times Mockup (Full Layout) A mockup of an article layout for The Seattle Times, integrating the data visualizations within a journalistic context. This layout includes headers, captions, and body text that frame the charts and deliver a coherent narrative about Seattle’s housing crisis. It exemplifies how data-driven storytelling can enhance reader understanding through visual design.
